She'd passed him on the streets of Lilycove city, a happenstance. He'd more than likely been surrounded by reporters or on his way to a meeting, carrying on with his business as usual. And yet he carried with him a heavy burden, a black stain on his perfect record. [break][break]

The tracker she kept on her person, fashioned and reprogrammed by Lulu Flint had worked. It blipped as Orion crossed her path, and again when she'd changed course to pursue him. In his possession was a Pokemon from the black market, it seemed. How he'd gotten his hands on something so nefarious and dirty was beyond her - irrelevant, really. She'd already found nothing but disappointment in the League to begin with, this made no difference to her.[break][break]

What it did mean, however, was that she needed whatever Pokemon he'd received from the Market.[break][break]

And she had waited until now to corner him, in the dark when he was least expecting it. Orion would be coming home and picking his way through route 120, oblivious to the danger she posed.[break][break]

His reason for owning the Luxray was innocent enough: it was a rescue. Before he was a councilman, Orion had been a Ranger, and as a Ranger had performed many a bust on black market operations in Hoenn. It wasn't the first Pokemon he'd rescued from their clutches, and it wouldn't be the last.

It was, unfortunately, the first one to harbor a tracking device — knowledge Orion lacked, and thus had done nothing to ward against.

In his travels through Route 120, Orion stays off the well-worn path forged by trainers passing through on their way to or from Lilycove and Fortree; where he roams, there is little light, little interference with the meditative quality of his walk. He knows these routes like the back of his hand, having lived in Fortree since he was barely out of high school and forging his own unsteady way through life.

On his belt, alongside the illicit Luxray, there were three others: Arbok, Thievul, Liepard. Strange Pokemon for a councilman, perhaps, but Orion was a strange man: he favored those Pokémon that others shunned, feeling sympathy for the misunderstood.

To that end, his Silvally and Absol accompany him as well, though their balls had been left at home. It is Absol who seems to first sense something amiss, fur rippling along its spine as it stops in place and growls softly.

"What's wrong, Altair?"

Absol were like black cats, a bad omen, a harbinger of doom, and more than willing to traipse between your legs to trip you on purpose. Fortunately, Emma isn't a stranger to the species, nor is she caught off-guard by the fact that Orion's is uncontained. The man seemed to favor the beast as it always seemed to be with him.[break][break]

But it was of no concern to her, Pokemon were tools and this one was no different. The BUG BUZZ that rises slowly as a means to disorient and incapacitate is subtle, a background noise. It could be mistaken to the human ear as nothing more than Kricketune song rising and falling - but it is far more sinister than that.[break][break]

And it appears that the Absol has picked up on this immediately. [break][break]

Emma waits, patient as always. Her Pokemon could take care of the councilman's guard dogs, and she could handle the man himself. She only needed his pokeballs, it was only unfortunate that she hadn't been able to decipher which one was the ticket. One might almost suggest she were protecting him- it was only a matter of time before the black market dealers came for him themselves. [break][break]

The world was grey, after all.[break][break]

It's several seconds before Orion's subpar hearing picks up on what has unsettled his partner, the drone vibrating uncomfortably in against his eardrums. Bugs weren't uncommon at night, but the hum unsettles him as he's reminded of Buzzwole from the war, the buzz of their wings as they gave chase.

How one of them had drove its proboscis straight into a Salamence and drank it dry—

Orion has to remind himself to breathe, heart rate picking up as traumatic memories threaten to overwhelm. Absol drops back to his side as if sensing his discomfort, leaning its weight against his thigh and blinking up at him with large red eyes.

"M'okay, buddy," he mumbles, reaching down to scratch the Pokemon behind its horn. "Thanks."

Still, his gaze darts around the trees, searching for the source of the sound.

Ah yes, fear.[break][break]

Although she does not possess the animalistic senses to smell the man's unease, she can see it clear as day in the subtleties of his actions. His footsteps slow before they quicken, his fingertips twitch and find purchase in his Absol's fur.[break][break]

It is in that moment the huntress takes aim. Her breath is steady, her finger resting against the trigger. The sudden rise in her Galvantula's BUG BUZZ muffles the sound of the gunshot, and the webbing imbued in her bullet casing expands upon exiting the barrel, hopefully tackling and tangling either the Absol or the Silvally.[break][break]

The second bullet would take aim at the next Pokemon in rapid succession, and her Pokemon fell into step just so.[break][break]

Galvantula's full-force of the attack aims to keep the Absol downed, while the rest of her spiders collapse upon him and his companions with sticky webs and trembling fangs. Whichever Pokemon aims to fight the hardest or doesn't succumb to the electrified threads would be scooped up by Araquanid's water-bubble.[break][break]

"I'm afraid you have something that doesn't belong to you."[break][break]

Emma steps out from her hiding-place, rifle still raised. She's wrapped in dark clothing and her face hidden in the shadow of her hood and ambiguous behind a shapeless mask. [break][break]

Emma Wolfe is a practiced assassin, and her plan is executed almost perfectly.

Distracted by the droning hum, which sounds as if it's getting closer, louder, Orion does not hear the gunshot. The disaster which will soon befall them is not natural, and thus Absol is given no warning before the net tangles its limbs.

Silvally is the outlier.

Bred to fight Ultra Beasts and the veteran of war, Silvally will not be so easily bested. Almost as if on reflex, its brilliant crest glows with the energy of an AERIAL ACE to slice through the bindings and cut itself free. It snarls, gums pulled back to reveal sharp fangs coated in hoarfrost. It springs toward the closest foe to attack.

Orion stumbles back in surprise, trips as stick webs entangle his limbs. But his concern is not for himself, but his Pokémon.

"Flamethrower!" he cries, struggling against the web. "Who the hell are you?"

But the brilliant flames of Absol's would-be escape are doused by Araquanid's bubble.
